The City has done extensive traffic investigation of the section of Kalamunda Road between Roe Highway and Abernethy Road which resulted with the Kalamunda Road Functional Review and Upgrade Report (Cardno Feb 2020).   This report recommended a roundabout at the Hawkevale intersection. The Kalamunda Road Functional Review and Upgrade Plan was adopted by the Council at the Ordinary Council Meeting 25 August 2020. (OCM 169/2020).  

It addresses a number of crashes on Hawkevale Road and Range View Rd intersections, provides safe access to Kalamunda Road and provides a good traffic camling device to maintain safe speeds on Kalamunda Road.

The road will be closed, traffic will have access to Kalamunda Road via Range Court.

Construction is planned for 2024/25Financial Year.  It is proposed that any services such as power lines or gas etc will be relocated in the 2023/24Financial Year.

• The intersection significantly improves road safety for road users including pedestrians and cyclists.
• Provide safe effective transport connection for the local community.
• Converts the existing staggered intersection to a much safer 4-way roundabout.
• Improved service reliability and safety due to reduction in conflict points
• Improved road infrastructure for bus routes (294, 295, 299)
• Treats a number of right turn crashes at Hawkevale Road and Range View Rd.

From the traffic study, 2 options were investigated:

• Roundabout.
• Traffic Signals. 

The roundabout provided the best solution to treat accidents, provide safe access to Kalamunda Road from Hawkevale Rd and Range Ct.

Better traffic flows on Kalamunda Rd than traffic signals and control traffic speeds on Kalamunda Road.

This was also identified as the Main Roads WA preferred option.
