What is the Hale Road/Woolworths Drive Intersection Improvement Project?

    The Hale Road/Woolworths Drive Intersection Improvement Project is a proposal to implement traffic changes in the vicinity of the Hale Road and Woolworths Drive intersection in Forrestfield to reduce congestion and improve road user safety.

    Why is the project being undertaken?

    The proposal was initiated by City of Kalamunda in response to community feedback regarding safety and congestion at the Hale Road/Woolworths Drive intersection, Forrestfield.

    What traffic changes are being proposed?

    Traffic engineers have proposed a number of potential solutions to improve the safety and efficiency of the intersection.

    These solutions are:

    Option 1

    • Installation of a roundabout at the Hale Road/Woolworths Drive intersection with full access to Hanover Street retained;

    • Modifications to kerbing, line-marking and median islands on Hale Road between Woolworths Drive and Strelitzia Avenue; and

    • Modifications to the entry and egress points from the Commercial properties fronting Hale Road.

    Option 2

    • Installation of traffic signals at the Hale Road/Woolworths Drive intersection;

    • Modifications to kerbing, line-marking and median islands on Hale Road between Woolworths Drive and Strelitzia Avenue;

    • Modification of the Hale Road/Hanover Street intersection to left-in/left-out; and

    • Modifications to the entry and egress points from the Commercial properties fronting Hale Road.

    Option 3
    • Modifications to kerbing, line-marking and median islands on Hale Road between Woolworths Drive and Strelitzia Avenue; and

    • Modifications to the entry and egress points from the Commercial properties fronting Hale Road.

    Option 4

    • Installation of a roundabout at the Hale Road/Woolworths Drive intersection;

    • Modification of the Hale Road/Hanover Street intersection to left-in/left-out;

    • Modifications to kerbing, line-marking and median islands on Hale Road between Woolworths Drive and Strelitzia Avenue; and

    • Modifications to the entry and egress points from the Commercial properties fronting Hale Road.

    What else should I know about the proposed options?

    Each option is likely to vary in cost, time to construct, volume of additional works required (i.e. land acquisition, service relocations, etc.) and overall complexity.

    A summary of the expected implications is provided below.

    Option 1 - Roundabout

    • Cost: High

    • Complexity: High

    • Estimated time to construct: 12 months

    Option 2 - Traffic Signals

    • Cost: Medium

    • Complexity: Medium/High

    • Estimated time to construct: 9 months

    Option 3 - Channelisation
    • Cost: Low

    • Complexity: Low

    • Estimated time to construct: Up to 6 months

    Option 4 - Roundabout with side road turning modifications
    • Cost: High
    • Complexity: High
    • Estimated time to construct: 12 months

    Why have these four options been selected?

    Thorough traffic analysis and modelling of the intersection has shown the above options will be the most effective in improving safety and congestion at the Hale Road/Woolworths Drive intersection.
