Formerly the Lions Club Art Awards, this year the City of Kalamunda will present the inaugural Kalamunda Art Awards. Hosted by the Zig Zag Gallery, this supportive arts initiative will showcase a diverse range of multi-disciplinary artworks from talented artists around Western Australia.

This is an open exhibition, and we welcome applications from both established and emerging artists.

Note: Applications to the Kalamunda Art Awards 2024 do not guarantee exhibition of work.

Key Dates:

  • Entries close at 5pm on Wednesday 21 February 2024.
  • All successful applicants will be notified by 5pm 26 February 2024
  • All successful artworks are to be delivered to the Gallery between 10am and 2pm on Monday 11 March 2023.
  • The exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday 16 March to Sunday 7 April 2024.
  • Awards Night and presentations will be open to all exhibitors and will be held at the Gallery from 6pm, Saturday 16 March 2024.
  • The People’s Choice Award will be announced upon the closure of the exhibition, from Monday 8 April 2024. This will be made available on social media and through our website.
  • All unsold artworks must be collected by 2pm on Monday 8 April 2024.

Exhibition Information:

  • The Gallery will have a pre-selection process which will involve shortlisting pieces based on the following criteria –
    • Quality of work
    • Skill and technique
    • Strength of concept
    • Communication of ideas
    • Uniqueness
  • The total prize pool will be $4500
  • All unsold artworks must be collected by 2pm on Monday 8 April 2024.
  • Entries are limited to one artwork per artist.
  • Prices, titles and other entry details cannot be altered after the entries close on Wednesday 21 February 2024. No late entries will be accepted. If paying in person at the Visitor Centre, this must be paid for prior to the close date.
  • Please attach a high-quality image of the whole artwork with your application. If your work is framed, this must be included in the image.

Payment and Entry Forms:

  • Please apply through this online entry form.
  • The online entry application form will ask for the Booking ID number on your confirmation email from TryBooking, so please fill this out with the correct number to ensure that you have paid.
  • For any physical applications filled out, please send these to zzgallery@kalamunda.wa.gov.au with your selected image.
  • For in-person payment, you will be able to pay the entry fee at the Visitor Centre.
  • The online entry application form will ask for the Booking ID number on your confirmation email from TryBooking, so please fill this out with the correct number to ensure that you have paid.

Awarded to the best overall artwork.

Awarded to the best 2D work (painting, illustration, photography, and print work).

Awarded to the best 3d work (sculpture, installation, mixed media and textiles).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Artist Award - $500
Awarded to the best artwork by a First Nations person.
Sponsored by the City of Kalamunda.

Youth Art/Emerging Artist Award - $500
Awarded to the best work by a young person (12 to 25) and/or an emerging artist (within the first five years of their practice).
Sponsored by the City of Kalamunda.

Home in the Hills Award - $500
Any artwork that depicts the theme of ‘Kalamunda at home’.
Sponsored by the City of Kalamunda.

People’s Choice Award $500
People’s Choice Award.
Based on votes collected throughout the exhibition period.
Sponsored by the City of Kalamunda.

The City of Kalamunda reserves the right to not grant an award if there are no valid entries.

Conditions of Entry:

  1. A non-refundabe entry fee of $30 per artwork will apply for each registration. This entry fee does not guarantee that your piece will be exhibited in the exhibition. Please pay through the TryBooking link. NOTE: An additional transaction/booking fee (50cents) is applied by Trybooking when registering.
  2. All exhibitors must complete the Competition Entry Form.
  3. You must submit a high-quality image of your artwork with your application. Failing to do so, your application may not be successful.
  4. Entries are limited to one artwork per artist only. All works are eligible for the overall prize.
  5. Artists over the age of 12 are invied to submit work for the Kalamunda Art Awards.
  6. The artwork must be an original work of the artist and not contravene any copyright law.
  7. Artworks must be produced by the entrant between December 2022 and February 2024.
  8. All media welcome, including and not limited to painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, and photography.
  9. All pieces must be for sale. These will be retained on display until the end of the exhibition period.
  10. All artworks must be suitably presented and ready for exhibition. Non-standard display equipment specific to the artwork must be supplied by the artist. Special requirements must be discussed with the Gallery Curator prior to installation. Any works not filling this requirement will be returned to the exhibitor.
  11. 2D works are not to exceed 1100mm x 1100mm. All 2D works must include suitable framing to hang the artwork for public display using D rings or similar. Photographic clip frames and single string cords or wire will not be accepted.
  12. 3D works are not to exceed 1000mm x 1000mm or weigh more than 15kg. Where a plinth or base are required, if your work is a successful entry, please consult with the Gallery Curator.
  13. The Zig Zag Gallery will take 30% commission on all sales.
  14. The work must be packaged and clearly labelled with your name, contact details, title and price of work.
  15. Entrants will agree to digital images being created of your work for promotional purposes and credit given where possible.
  16. Artists must recognise that their entries are on public display in a public venue and are therefore subject to the risk of damage due to unforeseen circumstances and actions of the public. Therefore, it is the artist’s responsibility to provide insurance for their work. Entrants will not hold the organisers, its officials, volunteers, employers, agents and public servants, responsible for any claims of whatever kind or nature to any person or to any property arising out of or in conjunction with the Lions Club of Kalamunda Art Awards and the City of Kalamunda.
  17. All artworks will be judged. There will be two rounds of judging. The Gallery will implement a pre-selection process to shortlist works based on the above criteria. Shortlisted works will be judged by external judges from the WA arts sector. The judges’ decision will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
  18. Sales are made for the duration of the award exhibition, during normal Gallery opening hours.
  19. Sale of Artworks will require the artist to supply the Gallery with their relevant banking details. Please note that the administration of sales and payment to artists may take up to four weeks after the close of the exhibition.
