As part of the City of Kalamunda’s Arts and Culture Strategy 2023–2028, the Creative Residency Program supports artists by providing resources, connections, and space to develop projects alongside the local community.
Program Overview
Open to individual artists and small groups across visual, literary, performing, and cross-disciplinary arts.
Residencies take place at the Historic Lesser Hall, Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre.
Artists receive:
- A studio/creative space with flexible access.
- In-kind venue support for equipment and space hire (subject to availability).
- A $3,000 grant, payable in two instalments.
- Paid community engagement sessions at industry rates.
- Promotion of their work and events.
Residency Expectations
Minimum three days per week in the venue.
Two public engagement activities, such as workshops, talks, exhibitions, or open studios.
Residency dates:
- Round 1: 12–29 May 2025
- Round 2: 15 June – 5 July 2025
Residency acquittal due three weeks after completion.
The City encourages applications from First Nations artists, artists with disability, and those from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds. Artists will be selected based on their application, work samples, project proposal, community engagement approach, and contribution to a diverse and vibrant program.
A selection panel, facilitated by the Arts and Culture Coordinator, will formally assess applications.
Requirements and Conditions
- Artists must be 18 years and over to apply
- Artists must be locally based (live/work/study/play in the City of Kalamunda) or have a strong connection to the area.
- We strongly encourage applications from First Peoples, people living with disability, culturally or linguistically diverse groups, and LGBTQIA+ community. Please contact us if you require support applying and to discuss your access needs.
- All forms of visual arts, literary arts and performing arts or cross-disciplinary practices across these art forms are eligible. We ask, however, that interested artists take into consideration the space, its opportunities and constraints when considering applying to the Artist in Residence Program.
- All applications must be submitted online through the City of Kalamunda Portal and address the application criteria, questions and information requests. Assistance can be provided with the application if required.
- Creatives are encouraged to consider activities that will support their own creative practice and help strengthen their community connections.
- On acceptance of the grant offer, successful artists will be awarded a grant of $3,000 paid in 2 separate instalments of $1500.
- Successful artists must hold a minimum of $20 million in Public Liability cover.
- Artists must undertake the residency in line with the Creative Brief
- Payment of the community sessions must be in line with Council’s procurement process and will be paid at current NAVA rates via artist invoice subject to budget.
- Artists must provide their own materials and specialist equipment.
- Artists must provide their bio and details of their art practice, project and other activities plus images for promotional purposes to Council as requested. Copyright will remain with the artist but reproduction of the images/material for non-commercial promotional purposes will be granted to Council.
