Why has the City developed a Draft Local Environment Strategy?

Delivery of a Local Environment Strategy (Strategy) is developed in accordance with our Strategic Community Plan under Priority 2: Kalamunda Clean and Green – delivering environment sustainability and maintaining the integrity of the natural environment.

This Strategy will provide direction on the delivery of best practice environment stewardship in the City, articulating common environment values and priorities that will allow the City and Community to exhibit clear environment leadership.  It will provide for an integrated and coordinated approach to the delivery of environment services.

The engagement process provides the opportunity to express views, identify issues and opportunities to manage environment impacts, activities and planned improvements, and to provide feedback on the draft plan.

Why do we need a Local Environment Strategy?

The physical character of the City of Kalamunda is defined by its landscape and in particular the land from, remnant, forest, bushland, wetlands and creek lines. The City faces a number of challenges in the next 10 years, including:- Urban growth and densification- Increased demand for services such as rubbish disposal, built infrastructure, sport/recreation facilities and activities- Fragmentation of Perth's bushland- Declining rainfall, rising temperatures and extreme weather events- Meeting the health and well-being needs of future generations.A Local Environmental Strategy will recognise the significance of the environment to the people of the City of Kalamunda and what are the most important aspects of the local environment they want to participate in and see actively managed into the future.

What does the Local Environment Strategy deliver?

Kalamunda Clean and Green provides the framework to manage environment pressures and achieve improved sustainable practices over the next decade. It will assist in protecting the cherished landscape character of Kalamunda and guide improvements in the City’s own operations and its work with stakeholders and community groups.

The Strategy will provide for quality environment policy and a clear direction for decision-making for good environment outcomes. It will assist the City with an integrated and coordinated approach for the delivery of environment services.

    The Strategy:

    ·  Addresses the most important local community environment values

    ·  Commits to improving key environment outcomes

    ·  Sets goals, timeframes and measures

The Strategy, through continual review and refinement, aims to be a living document, responsive to changing community values.
