What is the Local Planning Strategy?

The Local Planning Strategy is the City’s big-picture plan to guide how land is used and developed across Kalamunda over the next 10 to 15 years and the City is inviting you (whether you live, work, run a business in the City, or just care about the future of Kalamunda) to have a say in it!

The Local Planning Strategy sets the vision and priorities for how our communities grow and includes where new housing should go, how we protect green spaces, how we support local businesses, and what infrastructure is needed for a strong, connected community.

The Strategy reflects what the community wants our City to look and feel like into the future.

Specifically, the Strategy will:

  • Outline the community’s long-term vision for the City’s growth and development.
  • Identify the City’s approach to key planning themes like housing, environment, transport, infrastructure, and employment.
  • Provide a strong foundation for a new Local Planning Scheme (the rule book for land use zoning and development).
  • Help ensure future decisions reflect both community values and State planning requirements.

The Strategy is also a statutory requirement under WA planning laws, which require local planning schemes and their accompanying local planning strategy to be reviewed every 5 years. The current strategy was endorsed in 2013 — it’s time for a refresh based on today’s needs and tomorrow’s opportunities.
