The Project

The City of Kalamunda is partnering with the Red Cross to help make our local community more prepared for emergency situations through the recently launched Perth Hills Preparedness Project.

The Project is funded by the State Emergency Management Committee through the National Disaster Resilience Program (NDRP), and will implement a multi-year whole of community preparedness program across the Perth Hills area partnering with the City of Kalamunda, as well as the City of Swan and the Shire of Mundaring.

The Project aims to build community resilience, by supporting community connectedness, improving understanding of local risks, and enabling community to take action to increase emergency preparedness. We know emergencies are confronting situations which have long lasting impacts on families and communities. The better we can prepare for them, the easier it is for us to cope, recover and move forward when they happen.

Utilising a collaborative, community development approach Red Cross will work with multi-agency local steering committees to deliver proven, non-hazard specific preparedness programs to address the needs of specific community networks including: primary and high schools (students, parents and teachers); at risk groups (via community service provider training and community forums); existing community networks (social groups, service clubs, local businesses etc.); and social media networks.

Project Goals

The goals of the project are to build preparedness capacity and capability of partner local governments and organisations while improving collaboration, and resource and knowledge sharing. The long-term nature of the project will ensure sustainability of outcomes and will be underpinned by a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation process. The project will adopt an evidence-based approach to building community resilience, informed by best practice research and lessons learned from extensive previous experience in preparedness work.

The expected outcomes of the project include:

  • Improved understanding of current levels of community emergency preparedness and awareness.
  • Increased collaboration between emergency management agencies and community stakeholders.
  • Improved partnerships between key stakeholders.
  • Increased emergency preparedness awareness amongst target community members.
  • Increased emergency preparedness awareness amongst service providers.
  • Increased emergency preparedness levels in target communities.
