To keep delivering services and facilities the community values, the City periodically reviews which land and buildings are still useful and which are not.

Divestment is the process when a council sells or transfers land or buildings that are no longer needed for community purposes or are under-utilised. Divestment can provide the City the ability to leverage its land assets to generate revenue and diversify its income stream so it is not wholly dependent on rates.

The considered sale of surplus land assets will provide the City with an opportunity to support community-based projects and improvements, and deliver more housing opportunities in the City.

The sales will also generate revenue to support the City's long term financial position and help prioritise social, economic and environmental enhancement.

The sale of the City’s land assets is regulated under section 3.58 of the Local Government Act 1995 (Act). This section of the Act outlines the requirements for the disposal of property by a local government to ensure transparency and fairness.
